In Relación de las Islas Filipinas (1604), the Jesuit priest Pedro Chirino records the name of the spirit as "Laon" and identifies it as a creator deity, equivalent to the Tagalog Bathala.
Among the Tagalogs, the supreme god was known as Bathala, who was additionally described as Maykapal (the all-powerful) or Lumikha (the creator).
While the spelling of the name "Bathala" given by Pedro Chirino in "Relación de las Islas Filipinas" (1595–1602) was perhaps a combination of two different spellings of the name from older documents such as "Badhala" in "Relacion de las Costumbres de Los Tagalos" (1589, Juan de Plasencia) and "Batala" in "Relacion de las Yslas Filipinas" (1582, Miguel de Loarca), the latter was supposedly the correct spelling in Tagalog since the letter "h" was silent in Spanish.
He was also nominated for best screenplay/story for the following films: Gilda (1956), Water Lily (1958) together with Carlos Gonda and Anino ni Bathala (1958), and most recently in Batas ng Lansangan (2002) with Manny Buising.
Maca is ruled jointly by Bathala, who has the prowess to summon and order spirits from Maca (and Kasamaan) if he pleases, and Sitan while Kasamaan is ruled solely by a deity named Sitan, keeper of all souls and master of four evil deities, namely, Manggagaway, causer of diseases; Manisilat, destroyer of families; Mangkukulam, causer of fires; and Hukluban, causer of deaths.
