  • Most species are macropterous (having long wings), but a few brachypterous (short-winged) and apterous (no wings) species are known.
  • Secondary reproductives, or neotenics, develop from either the reproductive line (brachypterous neotenics) or, in rare cases, the worker line (ergatoids).
  • The final instar may be the most important in determining whether the insect develops as a brachypterous form or a macropterous form.
  • Some fairyflies possess slightly reduced (brachypterous) to greatly reduced (micropterous) wings, while others may even be completely wingless (apterous).
  • Included are some of the few known apterous sawflies, those of the genus Cladomacra occurring in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, and a species with brachypterous females, Clarissa tasbates, in Tasmania.
  • Although some Agrotis species occur at very high altitudes in Hawaii and female Agrotis from New Zealand are sometimes brachypterous, brachyptery in both sexes of Lepidoptera species is rare and is usually limited to wind-battered habitats, often southern oceanic islands and sparsely vegetated areas where the moths locomote by jumping.
  • Many species are flightless, which usually can be seen externally: the elytral shoulders (outer anterior corners of the elytra) are reduced to absent in apterous and brachypterous forms and well-developed in species with well-developed wings.
  • The genus can be recognised by: head with mandibular plates longer than clypeus and converging in front of it; an angular, transversely directed projection in front of each eye, the eyes subpedunculate; the antennae each with 4 segments and the pedicel and basiflagellum angular in cross section and all faces deeply furrowed between the edges; the pronotum subquadrate in shape with its anterior margin much broader than the head; the wings often reduced (brachypterous); and the lateral margins and posterolateral angles of pregenital abdominal segments without tubercles.
  • Females, however, show far more morphological variation; they may be macropterous, brachypterous (reduced wings), or apterous (wingless), and often have clavate antennae.
