The International Association of Bryologists (IAB), established in 1969, is a professional association promoting bryology (the study of mosses, liverworts and hornworts) globally for both amateurs and professionals.
His specialism was the study of bryology and one result of this was the publication of his two-volume collection of dried, pressed specimens, A Collection of Specimens of British Mosses and Hepaticae, between 1818 and 1822.
He made contributions in the fields of lichenology and bryology (mosses and liverworts), and is also known for his research of Myxomycetes.
In 1983 the International Association of Bryologists awarded the Hedwig Medal to Sayre (and to Yoshinori Asakawa) for lifetime achievement in bryology.
