  • Mucoid degeneration is when fibrous tissue, such as tendon, has less organized collagen, more abundant extracellular matrix, and changes in the cells (fibrocytes) to act and look more like cartilage cells (chondroid metaplasia).
  • They are lytic lesions that usually contain calcified chondroid matrix (a "rings and arcs" pattern of calcification), except in the phalanges.
  • The pathophysiology of tendinopathy is mucoid degeneration, part of which is chondroid metaplasia of the fibroblasts.
  • The mixed-type is further classified as carcinoma with chondroid metaplasia, carcinoma with osseous metaplasia, and carcinosarcoma.
  • From a histological perspective, chondroid lipomas are well-defined tumors that have mature adipocytes in regions resembling lipomas and a chondroid component that has vacuolated lipoblast-like cells encircled by myxohyaline matrix.
  • Niebla and Ramalina are related genera distinguished by the hyphae forming multiple longitudinal gelatinized cords (chondroid stands), within the medulla.
  • A chondroid syringoma is a well circumscribed but unencapsulated, multilobulated sweat gland-derived tumor.
  • Histopathology of the lesion shows large areas of mature fibrous stroma undergoing hyaline cartilage metaplasia resulting in conspicuous lobules or gradual transformation into chondroid foci.
  • Subgenus Vermilacinia differs from Niebla by the absence of chondroid strands, and by lichen substance predominantly of terpenes; subgenus Vermilacinia commonly has “T3”, (-)-16 α-hydroxykaurane, and zeorin.
  • Vermilacinia combeoides was first described by William Nylander in 1870 as a species of Ramalina, which differs by the absence of the secondary metabolite (-)-16 α-hydroxykaurane and chondroid strands in the medulla, and by having pale pycnidia, or pycnidia may be absent.
  • The genus Vermilacinia was distinguished from Niebla by the absence of longitudinal organization of hyphal cells within the medulla into chondroid strands, and by the secondary metabolites (lichen substances) primarily terpenes that include the triterpene zeorin, the diterpenes (-)-16 α-hydroxykaurane, an unidentified triterpene, referred to as T3, and the aliphatic depside, bourgeanic acid.
  • Niebla, as defined by Spjut, has a two-layered cortex, isolated chondroid strands in the medulla, and lichen substances predominantly depsides with triterpenes differing from those in Vermilacinia or depsidones lacking the terpenes.
  • They included pleomorphic adenoma, myoepithelioma, myxoid neurofibroma, neurothekeoma (nerve sheath myxoma), chondroid choristoma, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, focal oral mucinosis, and an ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of soft parts.
  • The calcification patterns in chondroid lesions of the bone (such as enchondroma and chondrosarcoma), pulmonary hamartomas, degenerating fibroadenomas of the breast and calcified fibroids of the uterus have been described as 'popcorn calcification'.
