  • The satellites were placed in a near-circular, near-polar prograde orbit to provide near-global observations of the earth's weather systems, cloud cover, ice and snow fields, and reflected and emitted radiation from the dayside and nightside of the earth-atmosphere system for operational use by the Soviet Hydrometeorological Service.
  • The orbit evolved over time; the line of apsides rotated southwards so that the distance at which the orbit crossed the magnetotail current sheet progressively reduced, and a wide range of dayside magnetopause crossing latitudes were sampled.
  • Later, when it was incorrectly believed that it was tidally locked with the Sun creating a permanent dayside and nightside, stories mainly focused on the conditions of the two sides and the narrow region of permanent twilight between.
  • Due to its old age and proximity to the star, the planet is extremely likely to be tidally locked, meaning that one hemisphere, referred to as dayside, permanently faces the star, while the other, the nightside, always faces away from it.
  • At the equator of the terminator, which forms clouds on WASP-18b (in the west seen from the dayside) the cloud top is made of thin layers dominated by titanium dioxide, corundum (aluminium oxide), perovskite (calcium titanate) and iron.
  • Camera 1, which is sensitive in the 75-110 nm range, will primarily be used for observations of the dayside ionosphere, auroras, and stellar occultations, and for star field surveys.
  • Its orbit is optimized to spend extended periods in locations where reconnection is known to occur: at the dayside magnetopause, the place where the pressure from the solar wind and the planets' magnetic field are equal; and in the magnetotail, which is formed by pressure from the solar wind on a planet's magnetosphere and which can extend great distances away from its originating planet.
  • The entire star-facing surface of a tidally locked planet could be left covered in a lava ocean while the nightside may have lava lakes, or even lava rain caused by the condensation of vaporized rock from the dayside.
  • The mission will observe the solar wind interaction with the magnetosphere with its X-ray and ultraviolet cameras (SXI and UVI), gathering simultaneous images and videos of the dayside magnetopause (where Earth's magnetosphere meets the solar wind), the polar cusps (a region in each hemisphere where particles from the solar wind have direct access to Earth's ionosphere), and the auroral oval (the region around each geomagnetic pole where auroras most often occur).
  • STORM comprehensively fills gaps in our current understanding of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction by addressing the following science objectives: (A) energy transfer at the dayside magnetopause, (B) energy circulation and transfer through the magnetotail, (C) energy sources and sinks for the ring current, and (D) energy feedback from the inner magnetosphere.
  • Dungey envisaged this as a steady circulation with electric fields mapping throughout the magnetosphere (as predicted by Faraday's law for steady state); however, imbalances in the reconnection voltages in the dayside magnetopause and in the nightside tail current sheet were later recognised as the source of the phenomenon of the auroral substorm cycle.
  • The fact that SDSS 1557B is tidally locked creates vast temperature changes in the dayside and nightside of the brown dwarf.
