  • In early Christianity, some groups propounded beliefs of a fully human Jesus who was especially honored and raised up by God (adoptionism), while other groups argued for a fully divine Jesus that was more like a spiritual apparition (docetism).
  • The text then propounds docetism: that the divine Christ, as a spiritual being, was invulnerable and never suffered the pains of the mortal world, and certainly did not die during the apparent crucifixion.
  • It was alleged that the Apollinarian approach implied docetism: if the Godhead without constraint swayed the manhood, there was no possibility of a real human probation or of a real advance in Christ's manhood.
  • However, a deep division arose within the Brazilian Spiritist movement regarding the corporeal nature of Jesus, bringing into conflict the ideas of Kardec and those defended by Jean-Baptiste Roustaing, his contemporary, who argued that Christ had a body different from others, of a fluidic nature (docetism).
