  • The twelve-tone technique—also known as dodecaphony, twelve-tone serialism, and (in British usage) twelve-note composition—is a method of musical composition.
  • At various points in his career, he embraced plainchant, medievally-influenced modal writing, and 17th-century forms (in the 1930s and 40s, under the influence of Stravinsky and Hindemith and reflecting his commitment to the early music revival), dodecaphony and serialism (in the 1950s and 60s), electronic music (beginning in 1970), and the neo-baroque idiom.
  • His early piano pieces, from 1908 onward, take on from the late works of Scriabin but evolve new kinds of discourse, arriving in 1914 at an early form of dodecaphony (the Synthèses) and in 1915 at the Formes en l'air, dedicated to Picasso, a rather Cubist conception using an innovative form of notation in which different systems are placed spatially on the page in independent blocks, with blanks instead of bars' rest.
  • Under van Baaren and Seiber, he combined traditional forms with dodecaphony in his 1954 Introductie en adagio in oude stijl and 1957 Septet.
  • His serial period began with using Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique dodecaphony in Agon (1954–57), later experimenting with non-twelve-tone techniques in his Cantata (1952) and Septet (1953).
  • His music represented for a long time the avant-garde of the Italian production, both from the stylistic point of view (with the overcoming of verismo and the rediscovery of pre-nineteenth-century repertories) and methodological (with the progressive acceptance of the novelties of the Second Vienna School, up to the definitive acceptance of dodecaphony and post-Webernian serialism) and formal (in the musical theater he refused the traditional numbers introducing forms of instrumental music, on examples that started from the results of Alban Berg).
