Several linguistic issues are debated among linguists: various questions related to classification of literary and vernacular varieties of this language; issues related to meanings and proper uses of various endonymic (native) and exonymic (foreign) glottonyms (names of languages and linguistic varieties); questions on its relation to modern East Slavic languages, and its relation to Old East Slavic (the colloquial language used in Kievan Rus' in the 10th through 13th centuries).
While in the case of regions, rivers and mountains, English exonyms are the definite choice (not least of all because the features they describe often cross language borders), some lesser-known city exonyms whose difference is merely orthographic and does not affect pronunciation (Cassel, Coblenz, Leipsic, Hanover, Mayence) have begun to retreat in favour of the endonymic forms.
Some prefer terms that are derived from endonymic (native) names for Luwians and Arameans, thus using terms like Luwian-Aramean or Aramean-Luwian.
In spite of all the aforementioned endonymic tems, some modern authors still opt to use those based on the exonymic term Ruthenian.
Endonymic language names, known as endolinguonyms (autolinguonyms), endoglossonyms (autoglossonyms) or endoglottonyms (autoglottonyms) represent language names of endonymic (native) origin, created and used by native speakers as designations for their languages.
