  • The specification for GSM-R is maintained via the UIC project European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
  • The train-control component of ERTMS, termed European Train Control System (ETCS), is a functional specification that incorporates some of the former national standards and allows them to be fully interoperable with a few modifications.
  • Beside intermediately closing of functional gaps, new constructed lines will use European Train Control System (ETCS) as part of the assigned standard ERTMS.

  • Because of difficulties in provision of ETCS (signalling and control component of the ERTMS) onboard equipment to the trains some replanning has happened.
  • Level 2 – ERTMS uses balises to communicate with the driver, thereby dispensing with lineside signalling equipment.
