  • Shiitake grow in groups on the decaying wood of deciduous trees, particularly shii and other chinquapins, chestnut, oak, maple, beech, sweetgum, poplar, hornbeam, ironwood, and mulberry.

  • 7% of the district territory and are made up of common oak, hornbeam, linden, maple, of plant: fescue, clover, burdock, wormwood, and many others.

  • The most prominent tree species are oak (Quercus robur), beech (Fagus sylvatica) and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus).
  • Like the other local ancient woodlands in the area, the wood is dominated by oak standards, but the understorey is much less diverse and consists of almost pure stands of multi-stemmed, overgrown hornbeam coppice.
  • In terms of vegetation zones, at highest elevation predominate forest of European beech (Fagus sylvatica), at places mixed with common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), silver fir (Abies alba) and European hop-hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia) at more stony areas.
  • The wood is largely hornbeam coppice and oak, but it also has maple, silver birch, wild cherry and midland thorn, all of which grow over the spring anemones and bluebells.
  • This is an intact hazel and hornbeam coppice with fine oaks and ash that borders on Park Wood in the neighbouring parish of Poynings.
