  • The leaves are narrow, folded or flat, sometimes bristled, and with the basal sheath flattened or sometimes thickened, with a blunt or hooded apex and membranaceous ligule.
  • Peridium membranaceous, asci cylindrical, clavate or subspherical, with a persistent or evanescent wall, usually with a thickened and non-amyloid annular structure at the apex, usually 8-spored.
  • 7 – 9 cm wide on 2 – 3 cm petioles membranaceous, glabrescent above, and tomentose below.
  • When moist, the hymenophore is membranaceous (membrane-like) to pellicular (forming a peel or thin crust).
  • The cap is dry, silkily shiny or tomentose at the margin with membranaceous bronze fragments of the veil, the white fragments of which often adhere to the surface like scabs.
  • The leaves are mostly subsessile, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 8 – 18 cm long by 2 – 6 cm wide, membranaceous, tomentulose above, tomentose below.
  • The membranaceous leaves are narrowly lanceolate, 7–19 cm long by 2–4 cm wide, with a tomentulose to glabrescent upper surface, lanose below.
  • The young branches are terete, woolly and floccose, bearing thin, membranaceous sessile rhomboid leaves, 3–7.
  • The sessile, membranaceous ovate or elliptic leaves 3–14 cm long by 2–8 cm wide, glabrescent above, tomentose below.
  • 4 – 1 cm wide, membranaceous or subcoriaceous, tomentulose to glabrescent above, and tomentose below.
  • 2 – 2 cm wide, membranaceous to subcoriaceous, glabrescent to tomentose above, and densely tomentose below.
  • The young branches are subquadrangular and tomentulose bearing membranaceous oblong-lanceolate or lanceolate leaves 9 – 15 cm long by 3.
  • The young branches are quadrangular and tomentose, bearing lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate leaves 6 – 20 cm long by 2 – 10 cm wide, membranaceous to subcoriaceous, glabrescent above, below with adpressed indumentum, the margins entire.
  • The young branches are quadrangular, occasionally winged, and covered with a greyish tomentum, bearing leaves subsessile or with a petiole <1 cm, ovate or oblong-lanceolate, the blade 5–20 cm long by 3–8 cm wide, membranaceous, glabrescent above, and tomentose below.
  • Despite these similarities, the species can be recognized by its ovate-elliptic to cordiform leaf shape and more membranaceous leaf texture than the other species in the section, and stem, inflorescence axes, and calyx vestiture mainly composed of glandular hairs.
  • Schoenus aureus is a relatively robust, light-coloured sedge with ivory-coloured culm bases, long, membranaceous ligules, and golden-brown glumes.
  • Flowers at first enclosed in a persistent, membranaceous spathe which splits irregularly at the tip, 1 to many, solitary or fascicled between the leaf-bases; pedicel scarcely enlarged at the tip in some species, in others abruptly enlarged; tepals 3-25 in a complete or incomplete whorl, inconspicuous, squamiform to filiform, inserted on the margin of the receptacle in species with enlarged pedicels, but sometimes inserted at different levels in species with normal or scarcely enlarged pedicels; stamens 2-25, in a complete or incomplete whorl (the latter unknown in Panamanian species), rarely united at the base, the filaments lanceolate, 3-angled at the base, sometimes branched, nerved, the anthers sagittate, introrse; pollen ellipsoidal to subglobose, 3-sulcate; ovary 2- celled, ellipsoidal, attenuate at the base, with 2 equal carpels, 8-ribbed; placenta of the same shape as the ovary, with many ovules; styles 2, filiform or cylindric, cohering at the base or very rarely free, often emarginate.
  • It is composed of phanerophytes with leaf buds that are protected from drought by scales (cataphylls or hairs), having deciduous sclerophyllous or membranaceous adult leaves.
  • 5 mm in fruiting-, obliquely ovate-elliptic, subobtuse, membranaceous, glabrous, less frequently stellate-pubescent, generally purplish, with intercostal spaces about 1 mm in maximum width, and prominently ribbed, rarely setose; outer sepals linear-spatulate to elliptic, about 1/3 as long as inner sepals, glabrous or glabrescent, greenish.
  • Shell thin or membranaceous, globose or depressedly conoid; polished, very closely perforate, the columellar margin having no solidity.
