  • Portable instruments, usually equipped to also measure current and resistance in the form of a multimeter are standard test instruments used in electrical and electronics work.
  • A multimeter (also known as a volt-ohm-milliammeter, volt-ohmmeter or VOM) is a measuring instrument that can measure multiple electrical properties.
  • Connecting it to test equipment, for example, an oscilloscope or a benchtop multimeter, may ground the circuit.
  • In this design, the metal banana plug is entirely sheathed in a plastic tube and inserts into a deeply recessed jack in the multimeter.
  • Leads are used for many purposes, including: transfer of power; testing of an electrical circuit to see if it is working, using a test light or a multimeter; transmitting information, as when the leads from an electrocardiograph are attached to a person's body to transmit information about their heart rhythm; and sometimes to act as a heatsink.
  • This led to the term "buzzing out a circuit" (which means to test for continuity) Audible continuity buzzers or beepers are built into some models of multimeter, and the continuity setting is normally shared with the ohmmeter setting.
  • The bleeder resistor commonly found inside a flyback transformer is valued in the hundreds of megaohms range, and can therefore not be measured with the common technician's multimeter.
  • Among other projects, students design, build and troubleshoot a multistage amplifier and build a multimeter.
  • Load cells do NOT internally "generate" or otherwise "create" electrical "signals" are no "piezo-electric" devices and do not do anything but deflect and create varying voltage "signals" based upon electrical current supplied to them whether by a "display" or the scale head in actual operation or an analog volt-ohmmeter or digital multimeter when "bench tested" or otherwised demonstrated "operating" but not "in operation".
  • A faulty short-circuited capacitor will incorrectly be identified by an ESR meter as having ideally low ESR, but an ohmmeter or multimeter can easily detect this case, which is much rarer in practice than high ESR.
  • In electrical engineering, characteristics like current or voltage can be measured by an ammeter, a voltmeter, a multimeter, etc.
  • Isolation resistance measurements may be achieved using a high input impedance ohmmeter, digital multimeter (DMM) or current-limited Hipot test instrument.
