  • Through his father, he was a descendant of the Vienna exiles of 1670 and of the famous rabbinical Spira family; on his mother's side he descended from the Fischel family, which has given the community of Prague a number of distinguished Talmudists.
  • Moshe Mordechai Epstein (7 March 1866–28 November 1933) was rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Knesseth Yisrael in Slabodka, Lithuania and is recognized as having been one of the leading Talmudists of the twentieth century.
  • This Sefer ha-Yashar was used a great deal by later Talmudists and introduced the form of literature called Tosafot 'Additional Notes'.

  • Among the many learned Talmudists who were his disciples in Posquières were Rabbis Isaac ha-Kohen of Narbonne, the first commentator upon the Jerusalem Talmud; Abraham ben Nathan of Lunel, author of HaManhig; Meir ben Isaac of Carcassonne, author of Sefer haEzer; and Asher ben Meshullam of Lunel, author of several rabbinical works.
  • A 1912 religious census in Russia recorded 12,305 "Judaizing Talmudists", and 4,092 "Russian Karaites", and 8,412 Subbotniks who "had fallen away from Orthodoxy".
  • He divided the history of the Karaites into three epochs: the first beginning with the formation of a separate congregation without any external distinction from other congregations, in the time of Simeon ben Shetach; the second beginning with Anan, who made an open stand against the Talmudists; and the third beginning with the fourteenth century, when the first traces of the decline of Karaism began to be felt.

  • Jacob's name is known chiefly in connection with his edition of the Mikraot Gedolot or "Rabbinical Bible" (1524–25), which he supplied with Masoretic notes and an introduction which discusses the 𝕸, qere and ketib, and the discrepancies between the Talmudists and the 𝕸.
  • His Kur la-zahav is in two parts; the first part (Vilna, 1858) is a commentary on 109 difficult aggadic passages of both Talmuds, preceded by a long introduction treating of the Aggadah in general; the second part (Vilna, 1866) contains an essay on the religious dogmas and views of the ancient Talmudists and a commentary on 138 aggadic passages.
