On 1 August 1530, Pope Clement VII granted the Cardinal of Lorraine an indult allowing him to hold and accumulate the benefices in his diocese of Narbonne and the benefices of his abbeys.
In the Latin Church, usually only bishops may licitly administer the sacrament of confirmation, but if an ordinary priest administers that sacrament illicitly, without an indult (reserved to the Holy See prior to Vatican II, and reserved to the local Ordinary after the New Code of Canon Law was promulgated), it is nonetheless considered valid.
From references in Hovyngham's will to Kirkbymoorside, Byland Abbey and Skipwith, it seems possible that he is "John de Honyngham" the canon of St Mary's, Newburgh Priory (York diocese), who as perpetual vicar of "Kirby super moram" sought a papal indult in 1410–1411 to let to farm the fruits of the vicarage, when studying at university or living in some safe place.
The term universal indult was used to describe a hypothetical broadening of these concessionary permissions, but in his 2007 apostolic letter Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict XVI went even further than the proposed "universal indult" by elevating the status of the preconciliar forms beyond that of a concession.
