  • During the mushroom's development, the cap's periphery grows into the stipe below to form a hollow, roughly bell-shaped structure with the fertile spore-bearing surface (the hymenium) on the outside; as the surface growth of the hymenium continues to expand even after joining to the stipe, the hymenium can no longer follow and it arches up into folds and pads.
  • The mushroom's odor has been described as "pleasant to somewhat nauseous", becoming more cloying as the fruit body ages.
  • When collecting for the table, young specimens are preferred, as older ones "literally seethe with fat, agitated maggots and sag with so much excess moisture that they practically demand to be wrung out like a sponge!" Michael Kuo's 100 Edible Mushrooms (2007) rates the mushroom's edibility as "bad" and warns that dishes cooked with the mushroom will assume an unpleasant taste.
  • Gills: On the underside of the mushroom's cap, there are narrow gills that are moderately crowded together, and they have an adnexed to sinuate attachment to the stipe.
  • 3 cm, with a pale yellow to orange color in the upper part of the mushroom's stem with a light yellow on the ground, becoming brown to blackish with handling, stuffed, subcylindric to cylindrical, with irregular ragged patches and strands of orange-yellow felted to membranous material on the outer surface; the stem decoration becomes more intensely orange when handled.
  • The specific epithet strobilomyces derives from this mushroom's resemblance to members of the Strobilomyces genus as a result of the spiky squamules on the cap.
